Jane
Evans, Grade 1 and Dawn Ferris, Grade 2 St. John School…
“We have had the privilege of having Dianne Potts in our
classrooms as one of the Learning Through the Arts specialists.
Dianne has a natural gift of tying music in with any area of
the curriculum, and we are all looking for ways to integrate
subject areas to meet the overwhelming number of expectations
required.
Dianne managed to cover a huge range of expectations in both
Language and Music in the grade 1 and 2 classes; such as punctuation,
contractions, word families, rhythm and beat (in words, poetry
and music), components of a story (beginning, middle and end)
which culminated in the creation of Big Books, reinforcing the
above concepts. She also brought in a wide variety of instruments
to demonstrate their use and we ended this activity by performing
a concert reading music.
She left us with an awesome tape of the songs she created, and
her lesson plans, which included the various poems, stories
and chants used in her unit.
The greatest gift was her development of songs based on the
Dolch Word Lists. The children love these and regularly sing
her songs with great enthusiasm, which has helped them learn
and retain their sight words far more quickly.
… we feel that teachers would be eager to purchase this
invaluable resource.
… see the absolute joy on the childrens' faces while they
are learning a huge number of skills.

B.
Facca, Grade 1, NorWesterView School
“ – very curriculum relevant – some main concepts
covered extremely well ie: rhyming, recount, punctuation
- songs – cute, catchy, easy to remember
- tape provided which was extremely helpful to me
- very little prep for classroom teacher! (good)
L. Markall, Grade 1, McKellar Park School
“I found Dianne’s presentations to be very well
organized and well paced for this age group. The children enjoyed
the sessions and responded enthusiastically to her materials
and her personality. I would definitely participate in this
program again” (LTTA)
Katie Ostrom, Grade 1, Nor’WesterView School
“Excellent! Dianne’s presentations opened up a greater
awareness of rhyme, story structure and alliteration in our
students. The children now spontaneously sing/chant the ‘Who,
What, Where, When, Why’ song when we are writing recounts
together, and they are recognizing and creating rhyme everywhere!
Thanks, Dianne!”
Mrs. Kondreska, Grade 3, Five Mile School
“ Students looked forward to Mrs. Potts’ visits
• a lot of curriculum was covered
• many active activities/lots of movement
• Dianne’s enthusiasm really held students’
attention – they learned and remember most concepts
• The tape she created was really helpful to reinforce
concepts
• I would really recommend her to any teacher and would
love the chance for her to come back
• I learned many new activities, also!”
Irene Humphries, Grade 3, McKellar Park School
“Dianne was awesome! She kept the students engaged at
all times! The songs, the music, zippering (new to me!) were
all super. All lessons were pertinent to the program. They are
lessons I can repeat throughout the year!”
M. Frolic, Grade 3, Sherbrooke School
“What a wonderful program! My students were so involved
and excited to be a part of Learning Through the Arts. Dianne
was absolutely amazing”
F. Grant, Grade 3, Edgewater Park School
“ Excellent rapport with the students
“ a lot of energy and enthusiasm was demonstrated in Dianne’s
sessions with the students
• the students responded well and enjoyed the music and
assignments Dianne created for our Learning Through the Arts”
Rita Comuzzi, Grade 1, Ogden School
“very useful…
• reinforces concepts taught
• gives me a new medium to remind children about spacing,
punctuation, etc. – just break into song!
• tape is very helpful for people like me who have no
musical background.”
